Paint on construction paper or let them use a small cardboard box.

Tins for Storage

Save tins and use them to store small loose items. In this picture I used an empty black pepper tin and put loose screws, nuts and nails in the container.

Also works great for storing buttons, small candy, mini sewing kit, bobby pins, costume jewerly, loose change and misc hardware.

Homemade Fabric Softener
A friend of mine sent me this link for homemade fabric softener. I haven't tried it yet but I will soon! If you try this or have made homemade fabric softener let me know what you think! Click here to leave feedback and I will be sure to post your comments for others to read!

Ingredients needed:
1 Cup  baking soda
6 Cups distilled white vinegar
8 Cups water
10-15 drops of essential oil (ex: lemon, orange, other choice)

Find a container to store the softener in. Add baking soda and 1 cup of water.
Next add the vinegar slowly. It should fizz a little bit.
Add the rest of the water.
Add the drops of oil and you are done!
Make sure it is stirred well.

Dishwashing Detergent

I ran out of dishwashing detergent a few weeks ago so I did some research to find one I could make. While I think the store bought brand did a slightly better job, the homemade receipt worked just fine. It was nice to have the ingredients so I didn't have to run out and buy some right away.

Here is what I used to make the detergent. This makes one load.

  • One tablespoon of  washing soda to the dishwasher dispenser.
  • One tablespoon of borax to the dishwasher dispenser.
  • Two tablespoons of distilled white vinegar into the rinse aid for clear rinse.

    Homemade Laundry Detergent

I love that I can now make my own detergent. It is actually fun! The clothes have been coming out clean, we even washed my husband's winter jacket which was filthy and it came out brand new looking. Here's how I make it.

What you need to get started:

    1 - 5 Gallon Bucket w/ lid
    1 - Bar of Soap
    1 - cup Washing Soda
    1/2 - cup Borax

First you will want to boil 4 cups of water in a big pan.
Take the bar of soap and grate it with a grater. Cheese grater works well. Put the shredded soap in the boiling water.
Stir every minute while boiling for about 10 minutes. Try and get rid of any clumps.
Once the mixture is stirred very well, put about 3 gallons of water in the 5 gallon bucket.
Add the borax and washing soda, stir for about a minute.
Add the soapy water from the stove to the mixture. Stir again on and off for about 3 minutes.
Now you want to let the mixture cool for about 20 minutes and then put the cover on. I did not have a cover and used saran wrap and put something flat over the top which will also work.
You want to let the mixture sit for 24 hours. The next day you should stir the mixture again on and off for a good 8-10 minutes. It will be lumpy and stirring it will break that up and get rid of the clumps.
And you are done! You can either leave the detergent in the bucket and scoop it out or you can pour it into 6-8 plastic containers. I chose to use containers, I like to shake the detergent before each load.
    Use between 1/2 c - 3/4 c for a full load.
