 Did You Know?

  • Check the coupons closely, if they don't say "excluding trail size" you can use it on trail size products. For example if you have a $1 off coupon on toothpaste you might be able to get the trial size for free since they are generally a $1 or less.
  • Buy butter and milk at a good price and buy more than you normally do. Milk can be frozen up to 3 months and butter up to one year.
  • Clean stains on coffee mugs by using warm/hot water and a 1st of salt. Swirl around, scrub and rinse.
  • Pull the shower curtain across the tub after each shower, it will have less mildew buildup.
  • Use the mesh bag that your onions or oranges come in to scrub the dishes and pans that have gunk on them. Throw away after one use.
  • To preserve the color of your clothes, turn them inside out when you wash them.
  • If you put your candles in the fridge for an hour or longer, the candle will burn more slowly and it will burn evenly.
  • Dirty Spounge? Just add them to your next dishwasher load instead of tossing them out. Place them in the silverware bin.
  • Stain on your fabric? Use white vinegar or lemon juice. Dab in the area and use a clean damp rag.
  • If your drain is clogged you can use 1/2 cup baking soda and then add 1 Cup vinegar. Wait 15 minutes and pour boiling water down the drain.

Make It, Freeze It, Enjoy it Later

Have you considered making meals and freezing them? I didn't until 10 months ago. A friend called and asked if I wanted to meet her and 4 other girls to cook for a couple hours and bring home meals to freeze.

I was skeptical, thinking it was unusual and that the food would not be good when cooking it the second time.

To my amazement I enjoyed the frozen meals very much. My husband was excited to see what meals I was bringing home each month. I think he was also happy to see me try different recipes. We had gotten comfortable with some repeatable meals.

It also made a significant difference in my grocery shopping. I spend way less at the store and I go less often. Every month that we meet I look forward to learning how to make different meals and discovering my new taste buds.

You don't have to join a cooking group to be able to make meals and freeze them. You can do this on your own!

Scrambled Eggs are the most popular in my home! Freeze them in smaller portions to make a quick easy breakfast in the morning.

  Make Your Own Laundry Detergent!

I love that I can now make my own detergent. It is actually fun! The clothes have been coming out clean, we even washed my husband's winter jacket which was filthy and it came out brand new looking. Here's how I make it.

What you need to get started:

1 - 5 Gallon Bucket w/ lid
1 - Bar of Soap
1 - cup Washing Soda
1/2 - cup Borax

First you will want to boil 4 cups of water in a big pan.
Take the bar of soap and grate it with a grater. Cheese grater works well. Put the shredded soap in the boiling water.
Stir every minute while boiling for about 10 minutes. Try and get rid of any clumps.
Once the mixture is stirred very well, put about 3 gallons of water in the 5 gallon bucket.
Add the borax and washing soda, stir for about a minute.
Add the soapy water from the stove to the mixture. Stir again on and off for about 3 minutes.
Now you want to let the mixture cool for about 20 minutes and then put the cover on. I did not have a cover and used saran wrap and put something flat over the top which will also work.
You want to let the mixture sit for 24 hours. The next day you should stir the mixture again on and off for a good 8-10 minutes. It will be lumpy and stirring it will break that up and get rid of the clumps.
And you are done! You can either leave the detergent in the bucket and scoop it out or you can pour it into 6-8 plastic containers. I chose to use containers, I like to shake the detergent before each load.
Use between 1/2 c - 3/4 c for a full load.
